The Diocesan Vision: Unfolding God's Plan
We are called to be a Catholic diocese which is:
faithful to the mission entrusted to us by Jesus Christ
full of missionary disciples who work together co-responsibly
in vibrant communities of faith,
joyful in their service of God and neighbour.

OverviewThe Parish of Sacred Heart and Holy Souls is one of 217 Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of Birmingham that serves 450,000 Catholics in a population of 5 million people spanning the counties of Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, with Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihill, Stoke on Trent, Walsall and Wolverhampton. The Catholic schools in our parish boundary are Holy Souls Primary and Archbishop Ilsley Secondary. These are two of 240 Catholic schools in our diocese.
The chief shepherd of the diocese is Archbishop Bernard Longley, who is assisted by auxiliary or assistant bishops; Bishop David Evans and Emeritus Bishop William Kenney. Archbishop Bernard has about 200 active priests, who are co-workers with him working in parishes and various ministries and chaplaincies throughout the diocese. The diocese was formally erected on 29th September 1850, and had been classed formerly as the Vicariate Apostolic of the Central District (1840) and perviously the Vicariate of the Midland District (1688). The diocese was elevated to the status of an Archdiocese on 28th October 1911. Our diocese has a fascinating history in the revival of catholicism in England and indeed the United Kingdom. The diocese continues this mission in different and news ways today bringing the gospel to men and women, in Birmingham and further a field. An example is the diocesan seminary, St Mary's College Oscott, which forms men for the priesthood for dioceses in England, Wales and Scotland, and the Maryvale Institute which forms lay men and women in the UK and further afield. |
St Chad's Cathedral
Designed by Augustus Welby Pugin, the Mother Church of our Diocese is the Metropolitan Cathedral and Basilica of St Chad which is also the seat of the Archbishop of Birmingham. Built in a Gothic style between 1839 and 1841 our cathedral church was the first Catholic cathedral to do built since the start of the reformation. In 1941 the cathedral was granted by the Pope the dignity of being one of only four minor basilicas in the United Kingdom. Visit the Cathedral website to find out more.
If you can't make a visit in person to the cathedral you might like to pay a virtual 360 visit or watch Mass.
