The Sacrament of Baptism

When we are Baptised, we become a member of God’s family — the family of the Church—hence we are called the children of God. Baptism is the first of the three Sacraments of Initiation, the others being Confirmation and Holy Communion.
An excellent, and the most perfect way, to prepare for your child’s Baptism is to attend Mass each Sunday as a family. Yes, we can feel self-conscious if the little ones cry or are disruptive, but please try not find this as a reason to stay away. People will understand. If it has been a while since you last attended Mass, please do not be afraid. There is some useful information on our website to help you to come back to church.
How do I go about booking a baptism?
If you have not already done so, please contact one of the priests in order to arrange the date of baptism and the pre-baptismal preparation meeting. Baptisms are celebrated on most Sundays of the year (apart from the 1st Sunday of the month) at 1.30pm.
Once you have spoken to us about the possibility of your child's baptism, please fill in the BAPTISM REQUEST FORM. You can download it here or collect from the sacristy after Mass. Please return it to the presbytery as soon as possible.
After we have received the completed form, the baptism will booked provisionally. The booking is then finalised by your attendance at the pre-baptismal meeting. Please note that the baptism will not be able to go ahead on your preferred date if you do not attend the meeting. If there is a serious reason why you cannot attend, please let us know and we will do our very best to find a solution.
How many godparents do I need?
Each child to be baptised must have at least one godparent. It is, however, normal for them to have two - one godfather and one godmother. Each godparent should be over 16 years old and MUST be a baptised Catholic who has received the sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion. It is also important that the godparents practice their Catholic faith and they are REQUIRED to submit a copy of their Baptism Certificate to ensure they are baptised members of the Catholic Church.
How do godparents get a copy of their Baptism Certificate?
Please contact the parish where you have been baptised and they will be able to issue you a copy of the certificate. Baptism Certificates can be then handed in by the godparents themselves or, if they are unable to attend, by the parents at the pre-baptism meeting.
